United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s former chair of International Water Cooperation Ashok Swain shared a video of the mosque being bulldozed on his official Twitter handle.

According to Muslim Spaces, the mosque destroyed was Shahi Masjid in Handia, Allahabad and was constructed during the time of Sher Shah Suri.

It was demolished in the presence of the Public Works Department to widen GT Road while the matter was reportedly listed for January 16th in the lower court.

Mosques and Muslim worship have been targets of the politics of the BJP and its ideological parent, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, from the start.

This is evidenced by the demolition of nearly 500 mosques and shrines in the Indian state of Gujarat with impunity, according to a report of the People’s Union for Human Rights.

In relation to Nupur Sharma’s controversial comment on the Prophet, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath’s media advisor Mrityunjay Kumar posted a veiled warning last year:

‘Remember, every Friday is followed by a Saturday’. With a photo of a bulldozer, the cryptic tweet implied stern action against agitators involving bulldozers.

The advisor was indicating the drive of demolition of mosques, dargahs, shrines, muslim homes and businesses all over India by BJP and its ideological and political partners. The bulldozer is understood as a symbol of state sponsored brutualities in India.

Further evidence of the anti-Muslim drive is the disappearance of 650 mosques of various sizes in Amritsar, as per numbers obtained from Surinder Khochar, an Indian researcher who researches religious places in India and Pakistan.

The planned and well-rehearsed demolition of the Babri Masjid in December 1992 was a watershed moment in the life of India as a nation.

What followed was an orgy of communal violence that left hundreds dead and the idea of India – democratic, secular and bound by the rule of law –under serious threat. In the general election that followed in 1996, the BJP almost doubled its presence in parliament, from 85 MPs to 161.

In May,2021 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Union home minister Amit Shah says he will bring laws against ‘land jihad’ and ‘love jihad’ if it retains power in poll-bound Assam.
