Britons set to exercise their right to franchise in general elections today

04 July, 2024 09:20

Over 46 million Britons are expected to exercise their right to franchise in the general elections across the kingdom today.

As per details, over 4,500 candidates from different political parties and independents will vie for 650 seats of the parliament.

The polling is scheduled to begin at 7am local time and will continue without a break till 10 pm. Authorities have set up over 40,000 polling stations across the country to facilitate the voters.

The authorities will announce the results tomorrow (Friday) .

For the first time in the UK, identification has been made mandatory to vote and the troubled British people expect the incoming government to find a quick and lasting solution to their problems.

Any political party or coalition of parties will need at least 326 seats to form the government after the elections.

After the election, the newly elected members will take oath in the Parliament session on July 9 and the Speaker will be elected.

It should be remembered that the term of the Conservative Party government in Great Britain was legally until January 2025, but on May 22, British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak announced early elections in the country.

Meanwhile, YouGov’s MRP poll predicted Keir Starmer’s Labour will win 431 seats, up 229 from 2019. Tories on 102, down 263 seats from the last polls. As a result, Labour will get a majority of 212, the largest the party has ever enjoyed in the UK. However, Liberal Democrats were on 72 seats, up 61. Meanwhile, right-wing Reform UK has been predicted to win three seats.

The landslide Labour win would be a transformative result for British politics that will send the Tories packing after 14 years of rule and five prime ministers, during which Brexit and ongoing rows over immigration have divided the country.
