Controversial defamation law challenged in LHC

08 June, 2024 11:32

The defamation law passed by the Punjab government has been challenged in Lahore High Court.

A petition against the defamation law was filed in the Lahore High Court on behalf of journalist Jafar Ahmed Yar and citizen Raja Riaz. In the petition, the Punjab chief minister and governor has been made parties.

It should be noted that the Defamation Bill passed by the Punjab Assembly has become a formal law after the signing of Acting Governor Malik Ahmed Khan last night.

President Lahore Press Club Arshad Ansari condemned the bill as a law and said that the Pakistan People’s Party also cheated the journalists. The PPP is connived with the government as they deliberately sent its governor on leave, paving a way for approval of the controversial bill.

Arshad Ansari said that the Joint Action Committee will decide the future course of action.

Earlier, the controversial Punjab Defamation Bill, 2024, became law after acting Governor Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan signed it.

The bill, which garnered immense criticism, specially from journalists, received the final nod from Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
