Veteran Filmmaker Bharathiraja Dies at 84, Industry Mourns

Bharathiraja a well-known Tamil filmmaker has passed away at the age of 84 in Chennai on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

Fans and member of the film industry saddened after heard the news of filmmaker’s death, paying tributes from all over the India. According to reports Bharathiraja had been battling some  health issues which become cause of his death.

The filmmaker revolutionized Tamil filmmaking by introducing realistic village-based stories and filming in real locations. He was also known for his signature greeting, “Yen Iniya Tamil Makkale” (My Dear Tamil People), which fans came to strongly associate with him.

The acclaimed filmmaker was fondly known as “Iyakkunar Imayam,” (Pinnacle Among Directors), in Indian cinema, he was included one of the most respected filmmakers. In his film career, Bharathiraja was honored with six National Film Awards four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award.

The filmmaker played a key part in presented a new talent in Tamil cinema. He launched and supported several actors who later became leading stars in the industry.

Actresses’ names beginning with the letter “R,” including Radikaa, Revathi, Radha, Ranjitha, and Rekha is one of his unique trademarks for giving several actresses memorable screen.

In Tamil cinema, some renowned names, including Karthik, Pandian, Chandrasekar, Napoleon, and Janakaraj, Bharathiraja introduced or mentored them in the industry.

In Indian cinema, his role will be unforgettable for generations, and his legacy continues to inspire filmmakers and actors alike.
