Nobel Prize 2026 Announcements Begin Next Week: What to Know

The Nobel Prize announcements are set to begin next week, with the award for physiology or medicine being announced on Monday. The announcements will continue throughout the week and conclude with the Prize in Economic Sciences on October 12.

The awards recognise major achievements in physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and medicine, along with economics. In 2026, each prize comes with an amplified award amount of 12 million Swedish crowns, worth around $1.21 million. Winning a Nobel Prize also takes worldwide acknowledgement that few scientists ever get.

Who was Alfred Nobel?

The Nobel Prizes were conventional by Swedish chemist and businessman Alfred Nobel. In his will, Nobel taught that most of his prosperity should be used to generate prizes for people who had providing the highest subsidy to humankind.

Known mainly for his invention of dynamite, Nobel had many other interests, including business, poetry and languages. He spoke Russian, French, English and German from a young age. The original five prize categories represented areas close to his heart.

Nobel expended much of his career working on weapons technology and turn out to be wealthy through his business events. During the later years of his life, Nobel made a friendship with Austrian peace activist Bertha von Suttner, the first woman to get the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905, and her inspiration is extensively believed to have assisted motivate the peace category.

In 1896, the year in which Noble passed away, and it took some years before the first Nobel Prizes were presented in 1901 because of a legal battle over his will.

Who Decides the Nobel Prize Winners?

Alfred Nobel named the organizations accountable for choosing the winners. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the awards in physics and chemistry, while the Swedish Academy selects the literature laureate.

Sweden’s Karolinska Institute is in charge for the physiology or medicine prize, while the Norwegian parliament selected the Norwegian Nobel Committee to award the Peace Prize.

The exact reason Nobel chose Norway for the Peace Prize remains unclear. One explanation is that Sweden and Norway were part of the same political union when he wrote his will.

In 1968, Sweden’s central bank marked its 300th anniversary by establishing the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel through a donation to the Nobel Foundation. The award is presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences under principles similar to those used for the original Nobel Prizes.

Famous and controversial laureates

Many renowned people have won Nobel Prizes throughout history over the years, such as physicists Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr to writers Ernest Hemingway and Albert Camus, as well as leaders Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa.

Several members of the Curie family have won Nobel Prizes. Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes, while her husband Pierre, daughter Irène and son-in-law Frédéric were also honoured with Nobel awards.

Just five people in history have received multiple Nobel Prizes, Linus Pauling an American chemist and peace activist standing out as the only person to receive two Nobel Prizes on his own.

The Nobel Prizes have also faced criticism for some past decisions.Egas Moniz was awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for work on lobotomy, a practice that was later rejected by the medical community.

Numerous Peace Prize results have also been debated, such as awards relating Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres. The Nobel committee’s failure to award the Peace Prize to Mahatma Gandhi before his death in 1948 has also been widely seen as a major omission.

The Nobel Prize celebrations

The Nobel Prizes are obtainable every year on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

The Nobel Peace Prize ceremonial takes place in Oslo and is led by the chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee. The remaining prizes are presented by the King of Sweden at the Stockholm Concert Hall.

Later in the evening, around 1,300 guests attend a grand banquet at Stockholm City Hall. The menu is prepared months in advance by leading Swedish chefs and sommeliers and remains secret until the meal is served by around 200 waiters.

The banquet menu traditionally has a Nordic theme. Last year’s dishes included porcini mushroom soup, turbot stuffed with scallops and sugar kelp, followed by blackthorn berry sorbet with freshly baked cheese cream and browned butter sponge.
