General Elections 2024 : ECP filed review in Peshawar High Court ruling on PTI’s bat symbol

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Saturday filed a review petition at the Peshawar High Court (PHC) against its single bench ruling on Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) iconic electoral ‘bat’ symbol.

On December 26, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) suspended the ECP’s verdict of PTI’s internal polls as “unconstitutional” and restored the party’s ‘cricket bat’ electoral symbol.

PHC directed the election commission to publish PTI’s certificate on its website and restore the party’s electoral symbol. The court also stated that a double bench will hear the matter after winter vacations.

The court order said that general elections were scheduled for Feb 8 and the last date for allotment of election symbols was Jan 13.

Today, the Election Commission of Pakistan in its plea to Peshawar High Court (PHC) has requested to review the PTI’s intra-party elections and its decision related to the election symbol.

The Election Commission, in its petition, requested the court to fix the plea before a division bench (Jan 9) in the larger interest of the public. It said that the ECP is charged with the duty to conduct elections honestly, justly fairly and in accordance with law.

The ECP is seeking to undo the “interim relief to PTI” granted by the PHC single bench on December 26.
