Iran says it has right to defend, expecting to exercise restraint unreasonable request

A spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that based on the United Nations Charter, Iran has the right to defend its security and territorial integrity, so it is an unreasonable request to expect Tehran to show restraint.

Spokesman Nasser Kanaani said in a weekly briefing that the Gaza ceasefire has nothing to do with Iran’s response to Israel. Iran has continuously welcomed the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the truce is an international demand and the killings that have been going on for 10 months must stop.

The spokesman added that Iran is the most important and strongest international supporter of stopping the war in Gaza. He continued that Gaza will continue to support other countries’ efforts for a ceasefire.

Kanaani said that Israel targeted official guest Ismail Haniyeh in a terrorist attack on Iranian soil. Ismail Haniyeh was the leader of the political negotiation process for the Gaza ceasefire.

The spokesman said that based on the UN Charter, Iran has the right to defend its security and territorial integrity and expecting Tehran to show restraint is an unreasonable request.

Kanaani described the US as a party to the talks and not a mediator, due to the military support it extends to Israel in order to commit massacres in the Gaza Strip.

The spokesperson pointed out that some Western countries have avoided condemning Haniyeh’s assassination. They also prevented statements against Israel being issued at the Security Council, yet they demanded Iran not to respond to Tel Aviv’s aggression, which is contrary to logic and international law.
