16 December, 2023 17:34

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday dismissed Justice Mazahar Naqvi’s plea to stay the proceedings of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).

The apex court in its first open hearing on Justice Naqvi’s petitions against the SJC proceedings and its two show-cause notices issued to him was conducted by a three-member special bench, comprised of Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Mussarat Hilali and headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan.

The petitioner (Justice Mazahar Naqvi) approached SC to challenge the two show-cause notices issued by the SJC over allegations of financial misconduct. The judge contended that the complaints filed against him with the SJC were “politically motivated”.

On Friday, Makhdoom Ali Khan, counsel for Justice Sayed Mazahir Ali Naqvi appeared before the court and raised objections over the committee that had constituted the bench for hearing the instant petitions.

The court referred the matter to a three-member committee to examine the objections, raised by the counsel for the petitioner and adjourned the hearing until January 8, 2024.

At the same time, supreme judicial council (SJC) will resume hearing of the complaints of misconduct against Justice Naqvi on January 11.
