Karachi reports 17 deaths in past 24 hours; here’s the cause

KARACHI: In unusual turn of events, as many as 17 bodies have been found in the country’s financial hub, Karachi, in the past 24 hours, according to rescue officials.

The rescue officials said that bodies were found in Jama Cloth Market, Golimar, Super Highway, Gulistan-e-Johar, Federal B Area and Landhi, KMC ground Lyari, Golimar, Jahangir Road, Landhi, Godam Chowrangi, Defense Phase 7, Orangi Town Sector 15, and Khamiso Goth, while a tortured body was found near Surjani Town’s Fatima Society of the mega city.

All the bodies have now been shifted to various morgues across the city.

Most of the individuals were believed to be drug addicts and died of extreme heatwave in the city, said a rescue official, adding that the ages of the deceased persons ranging from 35 to 60 years.

The official further stressed that fatalities have been increasing amid scorching heat.

Karachi records hottest day of 2024

Meanwhile, the port city experienced its hottest day of the year, with temperatures soaring to record 43 degrees Celsius.

The locality of Gulistan-e-Johar emerged as the hottest spot in Karachi, with temperatures peaking at an intense 43.7 degrees Celsius.

The area around the airport was the second hottest, recording a temperature of 42.8 degrees Celsius, meanwhile, Shahrah-e-Faisal was the third hottest location with the mercury reaching 40.5 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office has warned that the weather will remain hot and humid in the city for three days.

The weather department has further advised citizens to take precautions as the city is going through a partial heat wave.
