Karachi University introduces new policy for PhD admissions; check details

24 June, 2024 20:52

KARACHI: In alignment with the Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) new PhD policy, the University of Karachi (UoK) has revised its admission policy, increasing the passing marks for the PhD admission test from 50 to 60.

This was announced by Professor Dr. Anila Amber Malik, Convener of the Postgraduate Studies Admission Committee.

The updated policy will take effect with the upcoming admission session, which begins on June 23. The admission test for both MPhil and PhD programs is scheduled for July 28, with the new academic session commencing on September 1.

Under the revised policy, candidates must now score at least 60 marks to pass the PhD admission test, while the passing marks for the MPhil admission test remain unchanged at 50.

Dr. Anila Amber Malik explained that the policy revision incorporates several elements of the HEC’s new PhD guidelines. One notable change is the lowering of the CGPA requirement for MPhil admissions from 3 to 2.6, which is approximately equivalent to 70% marks.

In addition to changes in admission test criteria, the updated policy also introduces more stringent publication requirements for PhD candidates. Students must now publish their research in an X-category journal or publish two research papers in Y-category journals.

Failure to meet these publication standards could prevent students from registering in the “Pakistan Country Directory” (PCD), as noted by university officials.
