In a welcome relief for citizens, the Metrological Department of Pakistan has forecast first spell of monsoon rains in Karachi this week.

The much-awaited rains are expected to bring an end to the scorching temperatures that have gripped the port city in recent weeks.

In its forecast, the Met office said, monsoon winds will enter Karachi from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea starting June 26.

“A low-pressure system currently present in Gujarat, India, is set to move towards Pakistan, bringing with it the much-needed rain,” it said.

“Citizens can expect light to moderate rain on June 29,” said a spokesperson said.

“Today the temperature is expected to remain between 38°C and 40°C, with an estimated 76% humidity ratio in the air,” said the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The lowest temperature may fall to 30.5°C.

On Monday, the temperature in the metropolis felt like 51°C around 2pm.

Chief PMD meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said that the port city would remain under the grip of extremely hot and humid weather for the next three days.
