Need for effective products for prevention and treatment of oral diseases has increased today amid rising rate of dental problems.

However, modern oral hygiene devices have neglected the most effective oral hygiene method and that is miswak.

Miswak was common for cleaning teeth in Arab, Iraqi, Greek and Roman societies in ancient times. A recent chemical analysis revealed that miswak contains a wealth of natural ingredients that toothbrushes do not.

The examination found that the miswak contained ascorbic acid, tri-methylamine, chloride, fluoride, silica, resins and salvadorin, which have the ability to heal inflamed and injured gums and have a stimulating effect on the gums, removing tartar and other plaque.

Additionally, these ingredients help remineralize the hard tissues of the teeth, whiten teeth, provide a barrier against bacteria, and increase saliva flow.

Miswak also contains healthy oils, tannic acid, sulfur and sterols that prevent infection. It also has anti-odor and antiseptic properties and prevent tooth decay and improve the sense of taste.
