MS Dhoni drops bombshell on IPL future

02 August, 2024 17:58

Former India captain MS Dhoni has finally opened up about his Indian Premier League (IPL) future amid speculation of possible retirement.

The statement from the legendary Chennai Super Kings wicketkeeper came at a time when the franchises are busy in finalising their retentions for the upcoming season.

“There is a lot of time for it,” Dhoni addresses spectators in Hyderabad. “We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.

“So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team.”

The franchises owners and the tournament officials meet on Wednesday in Mumbai to discuss change of rules including Impact Players, the number of players to be retained, and the occurrence and frequency of the mega auction.

Dhoni, who was supposed to lead the CSK in the 2024 edition, stepped down from the captaincy just a day before the start of IPL. He handed over the captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad for the tournament.

CSK narrowly missed out on a playoff berth under Gaikwad, finishing fifth on the table with 14 points, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru finishing fourth thanks to slightly better run-rate.
