Muharram processions begins in major Pakistan cities

The 9th Muharram processions have begun in major cities across Pakistan under strict security measures in place.

In Karachi, the main Muharram procession will begin from Nishtar Park at noon. About 4,200 personnel will be taking part in the security for the procession.

Sharpshooters are stationed on high-rise buildings, markets along the procession routes have been sealed, and 120 streets blocked with containers.

A ban on pillion riding is in effect in Sindh, and mobile phone services on the procession routes remain suspended. The procession will conclude at Hussainia Iranian.

Meanwhile in Lahore, the main procession commenced from Pando Street in Islampura and will conclude to Khaima-e-Sadaat before returning to Pando Street.

According to the police, a total of 79 mourning processions are taking place in the city on Tuesday.

Over 11,000 personnel are deployed for security and have closed the procession route to general traffic.

In the federal capital, Islamabad, the procession is scheduled to leave from G-6 Imambargah, following traditional routes to reach its destination.

Mobile phone services have also been suspended in different areas to enhance security.

In Quetta, the 9th Muharram procession is set to departed from Imambargah Nasirulaza at 2pm, following traditional routes to return to the same location.
