A second round of the National Security Committee (NSC) meeting — which is expected to take “key decisions concerning security and the economy” — began on Monday in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the chair.

On December 30, the National Security Committee (NSC) vowed to respond firmly to resurgent terrorism in the country and expressed the resolve that militants are enemies of Pakistan.

Senior civil and military officials including Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Asim Munir attended the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House.

According to sources, the NSC will approve clear guidelines on the country’s economy and security, while the meeting will also approve decisive actions against terrorists.

Sources said that important decisions are expected on the proposals that came under consideration in the meeting held on Friday.

The Prime Minister’s Office said that the participants of the meeting reviewed the country’s economy and law and order situation in detail.

The forum expressed an unequivocal opinion that Pakistan’s national interests will not be compromised and no one will be allowed to harm the national security.

“The basic interests of Pakistan’s survival, security, and development will be protected with great courage, consistency, and steadfastness.”

In the last meeting, the NSC had recommended extraordinary steps at the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to stop the smuggling of foreign currency into Afghanistan.

The meeting also covered the subsequent negotiations between the government and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).

During the meeting, Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar briefed the NSC comprising top civilian and military leaders on the country’s current economic situation.

The sources said the civil and military leadership resolved that Pakistan, which remained the worst victim of terrorism in the world, had gained peace after a long war on terror that began in 2001.

The state will not allow terrorism to resurface because peace was gained through the sacrifices of thousands of Pakistani citizens, it added.

Over the past few months, the law and order situation in the country has worsened, with terrorist groups like the outlawed Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the militant Islamic State group, and Gul Bahadur Group executing attacks with near impunity across the country.
