Netanyahu dissolves Israel war cabinet

17 June, 2024 14:32

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced to dissolve the Israel war cabinet following a meeting on Sunday, Times of Israel confirmed.

“The cabinet was in the coalition agreement with [National Unity MK Benny] Gantz at his request. As soon as Gantz left – there is no need for a cabinet anymore,” he added.

Following that, he is expected to hold consultations about the ongoing Gaza war with other ministers including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer.

The aforementioned ministers were part of the recently dissolved war cabinet.

Netanyahu said that “in order to reach the goal of eliminating the capabilities of Hamas, [he] made decisions that were not always acceptable to the military echelon” during the weekly cabinet meeting.

“We have a country with an army and not an army with a country.”

The committee was forum after Gantz joined Netanyahu in a national unity government at the start of the war in October.

Gadi Eisenkot and Aryeh Deri, head of the religious party Shas, was also part of the alliance as observers.

Both, Gantz and Eisenkot, left the government last week, over what they said was Netanyahu’s failure to form a strategy for the Gaza war.
