Pak-US partnership key to world security: Biden

29 March, 2024 17:14

US President Joe Biden has stressed that the enduring partnership between the United States and Pakistan was important to ensure the security of our people and those living around the world.

“The enduring partnership between our nations remains critical to ensuring the security of our people — and people around the world —and the United States will continue to stand with Pakistan to tackle the most pressing global and regional challenges of our time,” reads a letter penned by US President Joe Biden to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to the US Embassy, Biden said that the two nations, through the US-Pakistan Green Alliance framework, would continue strengthening their climate resilience; supporting sustainable agriculture and water management and advancing Pakistan’s recovery from the devastating floods of 2022.

He added that the Washington remains committed to working with Islamabad to protect human rights and promote progress.

The letter concluded that together, we would continue to form a strong partnership between our nations.

Earlier on March 15, Ambassador Blome had said that Pakistan was considered an important partner, expressing hope in working with the newly elected government.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that steps being taken to improve the economy and any kind of political and administrative pressure would not be tolerated in this regard.

Speaking at the anti-trafficking meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that due to smuggling, Pakistan has suffered enormous losses. The coalition government had allowed the export of 2.5 million tons of sugar in 2022, the sugar that we could have earned dollars by selling was lost due to smuggling to Afghanistan. The country is losing Rs400 to 500 billion annually due to electricity theft. The petroleum sector is also suffering from gas theft. Rs58 billion were recovered in the energy sector during the caretaker government.
