03 March, 2024 08:16

The session of National Assembly is currently underway under the chairmanship of Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to elect new prime minister.

The members of National Assembly are taking part in voting process to elect their leader of the house.

Earlier, the nomination papers of Shehbaz Sharif and Omar Ayub for the election of the prime minister were approved.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) had submitted nomination papers for Shehbaz and Ayub, respectively.

Shehbaz has the backing of the Mutahhida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP). It is believed that the PML-N candidate may bag over 200 votes.

Ayub, on the other hand, does not have the numbers and likely to secure about 90 votes.

PML-N leaders Ishaq Dar, Hanif Abbasi, and PPP leader Khursheed Shah submitted the documents on behalf of Shehbaz, while the SIC submitted Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ayub’s nomination papers to the secretary of the lower house.

On February 29, the National Assembly Secretariat issued the schedule of the election for prime minister’s office.
