PTI moves to disqualify Senator Saifullah Abro over vote for 27th Amendment

01 January, 2026 18:17

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has officially filed a disqualification reference against Senator Saifullah Abro with Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani. The reference was submitted after Abro voted in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, even though the party had decided to oppose it.

PTI Senator Ali Zafar shared the declaration of defection on his X account. He said that Senator Abro went against party policy by supporting the constitutional amendment, which led to the filing of the reference for his disqualification.

The voting on the 27th Constitutional Amendment took place in the Senate on November 10, 2025. During this vote, Senator Abro supported the amendment despite his party being against it.

In the reference sent to the Senate chairman, Ali Zafar stated: “In terms of Article 63A of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, I, in my capacity as the parliamentary leader of the PTI in the Senate/party head, hereby submit this declaration that Senator Saifullah Abro has defected from PTI.”

He further added: “The declaration is being submitted for onward reference to the Chief Election Commission for laying the same before the Election Commission in accordance with the said Article 63A.”

Ali Zafar explained that before the voting, a meeting of the PTI parliamentary party was held. In this meeting, it was clearly decided and shared in writing with all PTI senators that they must oppose and not vote in favour of any bill related to the 27th Amendment. He said the party record shows that this decision was clearly communicated to Senator Abro and that he was fully aware of it.

Responding to the reference, Senator Saifullah Abro rejected PTI’s claim. Talking to a private news channel, he said: ‘PTI didn’t oppose the 27th Amendment’. He also criticised Ali Zafar, saying: “Ali Zafar is not capable of leading.”

Senator Abro further said: “Neither the party issued me any letter, nor have I received any show cause or letter.”

Taking a dig at his own party, he remarked: “This party [PTI] has become a social media party. They post [everything] on the internet. I haven’t received anything.”

He also claimed that PTI founder Imran Khan had nominated him for the chairmanship of the Senate standing committee on interior. However, he said that “our people” working with members from the treasury benches deprived him of the position.
