Karachi Heatwave Alert: PMD Warns of ‘Super El Niño’ Impact Driving Extreme Temperatures
Karachi is likely to experience intensified heat conditions as meteorological experts warn of a developing “Super El Niño” phenomenon expected later this year. According to reports, unusually warm ocean temperatures in the Pacific are already influencing global climate systems, raising concerns about severe weather disruptions in Pakistan.
These oceanic changes are anticipated to disturb regional weather patterns, particularly affecting Karachi with irregular monsoon activity, increasing temperatures, and shifting storm behavior. Experts indicate that the city’s perceived or “real feel” temperature could rise significantly under the influence of this climate event.
Anjum Zaigham, Deputy Director of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), stated: “We are expecting El Niño this coming summer, and it is projected to intensify into a ‘Super El Niño’ between August and September.”
He further explained that El Niño conditions generally weaken monsoon rainfall across South Asia. “If a Super El Niño forms, 2027 could potentially become the warmest year on record,” Zaigham added.
Authorities and climate experts continue to monitor the situation closely as the potential impacts could pose serious environmental and public health challenges.
