Pakistan at UN Security Council: “Give Peace a Little More Chance” Amid Middle East Escalation

10 June, 2026 13:21

Pakistan has voiced grave concern over the rapidly deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, cautioning the international community that the renewed surge in violence has exposed the fragility of the existing ceasefire and heightened the risk of a wider regional conflagration.

Addressing the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad described the recent spike in hostilities as a sobering reminder of the dangers inherent in a fragile ceasefire and the potentially catastrophic consequences it could produce. “The cycle of violence and instability must end for the good of regional and international peace, security and prosperity,” he declared.

Ambassador Asim further warned that the collapse of diplomatic channels and the resumption of active hostilities have severely complicated the Iran nuclear file, driving the involved parties further apart and undermining the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) ability to fulfill its verification mandate. Pakistan reiterated its long-standing position that all unresolved issues — including the Iran nuclear question — must be addressed through peaceful means, diplomatic engagement, and sustained dialogue, with full respect for the rights and obligations of all parties.

The ambassador informed the Council that Pakistan has been actively working alongside regional and international partners to bring down tensions, secure a ceasefire, and return all sides to the negotiating table. Pakistan has maintained sustained engagement with Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkiye, Qatar, and China as part of these efforts. “Pakistan’s sincere efforts are meant to break the momentum of hostilities, save lives and give diplomacy a chance,” he stated.

As negotiations approach what he described as a critical juncture, Ambassador Asim urged all parties to exercise restraint and patience, imploring them to “give peace a little more chance” — emphasizing that continued diplomacy remains the only viable path toward a durable and lasting settlement for the region.
