Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the Indus Waters Treaty, describing it as a vital agreement linked directly to the lives and future of Pakistan’s 240 million people.

Addressing a seminar titled “Indus Waters Treaty: A Pillar of Peace and Regional Stability” in Islamabad, the minister said it was an honor to speak on a subject that goes beyond diplomacy and touches the very lifeline of the nation.

“We are not merely discussing a treaty today; we are talking about the lifeline of 240 million Pakistanis,” Tarar said.

The minister emphasized that the Indus Valley Civilization represents Pakistan’s true historical identity, adding that the people of Pakistan are the rightful heirs to one of the world’s oldest and greatest civilizations.

“For Pakistan, water is not just a natural resource—it is a matter of life and survival,” he remarked.

Tarar noted that for thousands of years, the Indus River system has nourished one of the world’s oldest civilizations, adding that Pakistan’s history is inseparable from the history of the Indus River.

He said agriculture remains the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, while the Indus River serves as its lifeblood by sustaining millions of livelihoods across the country.

Highlighting the historical significance of the agreement, the minister recalled that more than six decades ago, Pakistan and India made an extraordinary decision that resulted in one of the world’s most enduring water-sharing agreements.

“The 1960 Indus Waters Treaty holds a unique place in the history of international relations,” he said.

Referring to Pakistan’s longstanding position, Tarar stated that the country’s leadership has repeatedly made it clear that the people of Pakistan have an unquestionable right to the waters of the Indus River.

He criticized India for what he described as the unilateral suspension of the treaty, stressing that Pakistan would protect its sanctity under all circumstances.

“Today, we must reaffirm our collective resolve that the Indus Waters Treaty will remain intact,” the minister said.

Tarar further stated that Pakistan has consistently demonstrated its commitment to peaceful relations, constructive dialogue, and the sincere implementation of international agreements.

Issuing a strong warning, the information minister said that if any attempt is made to stop or restrict Pakistan’s water, the country’s leadership is fully determined to safeguard the nation’s water rights and deliver an effective response.

He concluded by reiterating that Pakistan remains committed to regional peace while firmly protecting its national interests and the water rights guaranteed under the Indus Waters Treaty.
