Sindh Government Plans Provincial Cell to Counter Social Media Disinformation

The Sindh government has decided to take measures to culminate negative and misleading propaganda on social media, with Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon calling for the establishment of a provincial-level cell to monitor, counter, and ensure accountability for the spread of false information. He made the remarks while chairing an important meeting of the Sindh Information Department.
The meeting was attended by Information Secretary Kashif Gulzar Shaikh, Director General Information Moazzam Pirzada, and senior officials, including Directors Muhammad Yousuf Kaboro and Hizbullah Memon. Participants reviewed strategies to counter misleading social media campaigns and propaganda deemed harmful to Pakistan’s national interests. Sharjeel Memon said certain elements were attempting to spread disinformation through digital platforms and stressed that effective legal action against those responsible was essential.
Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that while freedom of expression is a constitutional right of every citizen, it cannot be used as a cover for spreading false and misleading propaganda. He said timely and effective action against fake news has become a pressing need and reaffirmed that the Sindh government would take all necessary measures to safeguard national interests, promote accurate information, and strengthen efforts to combat cyber-related crimes at the provincial level.
