Bilawal says Federal Govt’s “Countdown” Has Begun After ‘Rigged’ AJK Polls

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has sharply escalated his rhetoric against the federal government, declaring its “countdown has begun” after rejecting the AJK elections as heavily rigged — a striking claim given PPP remains a key coalition partner to PML-N at the federal level.

In a video message, Bilawal alleged the polls were neither free nor fair, accusing authorities of orchestrating widespread manipulation, and described the elections using a string of pointed labels: “rigged elections,” “bullet elections,” “murderous elections,” and “bloody elections.”

Despite the outcome, Bilawal praised PPP workers for securing nine seats, telling them they had won “despite all this” and vowing the party would continue challenging what he called a stolen mandate, specifically pledging to keep pursuing seats he alleged were stolen in Mirpur and Muzaffarabad.

Directing his sharpest remarks at PML-N leadership, Bilawal asked whether they could hear the countdown for the federal government beginning — language that marks a notable escalation in coalition tensions, moving beyond routine election-result disputes into an implicit threat regarding the federal governing arrangement itself. He called on supporters to intensify campaigning ahead of remaining contests, specifically urging workers to secure victories for Bazil Naqvi and Javed Ayub in Muzaffarabad on August 4, framing that outcome as necessary to defeat what he called a PML-N conspiracy. He also announced a public rally in Bagh, Poonch Division, on August 10, telling residents to prepare for his arrival, and closed with a rallying call insisting PPP would not lose courage, retreat, or abandon the political field.

Bilawal’s remarks came as Prime Minister’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah announced PML-N had secured a simple majority to form AJK’s next government, winning 23 of the assembly’s 45 seats — a tally that, if it holds, would give PML-N the numbers to govern independently of PPP in the territory, regardless of the rigging allegations.

Sindh Minister and senior PPP leader Sharjeel Inam Memon echoed Bilawal’s warning, alleging PML-N, working with the Election Commission, distributed ballot papers to its candidates two days before polling, and claimed complaints from the sitting AJK president and prime minister were ignored by the administration. Memon called the process “historic rigging” and extended his criticism beyond AJK specifically, questioning the legitimacy of past PML-N electoral victories including those of Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, while reiterating PPP’s longstanding allegations regarding the 2024 general election.

These allegations follow a pattern already visible earlier in the AJK vote count, when PPP had raised similar rigging claims during the second phase alongside disputed accounts of violence in Khawra and an alleged assault on acting AJK President Chaudhry Latif Akbar — claims PML-N figures including Sanaullah had directly disputed at the time, describing the incidents differently and accusing PPP leadership of being misinformed.

The scale of this latest escalation — extending PPP’s rigging allegations into an explicit threat regarding the federal coalition’s stability — raises real questions about the durability of the PPP-PML-N power-sharing arrangement, though Bilawal’s rhetoric doesn’t specify concrete steps PPP would take beyond continued political agitation and campaigning.
