Pakistan’s Port System Enters New Era of Modernization and Digitalization
Pakistan’s port system is entering a new era of modern reforms and digitalisation under the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms.
The task force is working to improve trade, transparency and operational efficiency across the country’s ports.
For the first time in Pakistan’s history, a National Ports Master Plan has been prepared to develop a comprehensive strategy for port development.
Under the plan, a uniform port tariff system has been introduced to promote competition and transparency in port operations.
A modern cargo management system is also being introduced at Karachi ports to increase capacity and improve productivity.
The implementation of Pakistan Single Window and faceless customs assessment has reduced cargo clearance time from 53 hours to 18 hours.
The faceless customs system provides assessment officers with a secure digital environment. Customs authorities, banks and port operators are also being connected through a common digital platform to make business processes faster and easier.
Digitalisation, modern customs procedures and port reforms have improved cargo handling, trade facilitation and operational efficiency.
The technology-based port system is expected to create new opportunities for global trade links, investment and economic growth in Pakistan.
