Pakistan Marks Defence and Martyrs Day on September 6

Defence and Martyrs Day is being celebrated with national enthusiasm across the country today to pay tribute to the martyrs and ghazis who sacrificed their lives for the defense of the beloved homeland.

According to Express News, the day began with a 31-gun salute in the federal capital and 21-gun salute in the provincial capitals.

After Fajr prayers, Fateha was offered in mosques across the country for the martyrs of September 6 and special prayers were offered for their elevation.

Background of the 1965 War

The main issue in the background of the 1965 war was the dispute over occupied Kashmir. Tensions persisted between Pakistan and India over the issue of Kashmir after the partition of India. After the clash with Pakistan in the Run of Kutch, India allegedly decided to take large-scale action to avenge its defeat.

On September 6, 1965, India attacked Lahore from three sides in the dark of night with the help of the 25th Division, tanks and artillery led by Major General Niranjan Prashad. The Indian leadership believed that it would be able to capture Lahore.

To stop the enemy’s advance, the soldiers of the Sutlej Rangers made sacrifices and made it difficult for the Indian army to advance towards Lahore by destroying the BRB canal bridge. Chonda: The great battle of tanks

The Pakistani army stopped the Indian advance by putting up fierce resistance. The Chonda front was considered one of the most significant battles of the war due to the destruction of hundreds of enemy tanks.

The Pakistani army on this front was led by General Tikka Khan, under whose leadership the Pakistan Army defended Sialkot and also thwarted the Indian Army’s attempt to cut the GT Road.

This battle is considered one of the major tank battles after World War II.

Vigorous operations by the Pakistan Air Force

On September 6, the Pakistan Air Force also targeted the Indian air bases of Pathankot, Adampur and Halwara. According to the details provided, 10 Indian aircraft were destroyed and several others were damaged during the Pakistan Air Force’s operation in Pathankot.
