PTA issues clarification regarding blocking VPNs in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued clarification over reports of blocking virtual private networks (VPNs) in the country.

In a statement, the authority clarified that VPNs are not being blocked and encouraged IT companies, software houses, freelancers, and banks to register their internet protocols (IPs) for using VPNs.

Virtual private networks have become increasingly popular in Pakistan, particularly after the blockage of social media platforms and internet disruptions.

Users have been relying on VPNs for site accessibility, fast connections, and speedy downloads.

However, the authorities have faced criticism for internet disruptions, with many attributing the slowdown to the testing of an internet firewall.

The PTA has previously blamed a surge in virtual private network use for the slowdown and has encouraged registration of VPNs through a “one window operation” available on their website and the Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB) website.

The registration process is free of cost and takes two to three days. Over 20,000 IPs have been registered for virtual private networks since 2020.

The authority’s clarification comes after PTA Chairman Hafeezur Rehman confirmed that the PTA was whitelisting VPNs through an automated process to ensure the smooth and secure functioning of IT services and online businesses.
