PTI postpones protest rally in Islamabad

26 July, 2024 18:08

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has reserved its judgment on a petition filed by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) seeking permission to hold a protest in the federal capital.

The party had planned to hold a peaceful protest on Friday, but has now postponed it following the court’s order.

PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan had called for nationwide protests on Friday, citing three key demands: the immediate release of incarcerated PTI leaders and supporters, maintaining peace in the country, and protesting against growing inflation.

During the hearing today, presided over by Justice Saman Rifat, the state counsel informed the court that the Islamabad administration had denied permission for the protest due to a tense security situation.

The court inquired about the permission granted to Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) for their protest, to which the Attorney General replied that permission was not granted.

Justice Saman questioned the relevance of the JI sit-in to the PTI protest and why PTI could not receive permission. T

The court noted that the F-9 area, where PTI planned to protest, does not fall under Section 144. However, the Attorney General clarified that Section 144 had been imposed across the entire city.

Following the IHC’s decision, the PTI postponed its rally in Islamabad.
