Public holiday declared in Karachi on June 29

KARACHI: The local government has announced a public holiday in Karachi on Saturday to commemorate the Urs of Abdullah Shah Ghazi, a revered Sufi saint of the subcontinent.

The three-day annual Urs celebrations, which began on Tuesday, June 27, 2024, will culminate on Saturday, with all offices under the jurisdiction of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) remaining closed on the occasion.

The Urs celebrations, which are being held for the 1294th time, have been formally inaugurated by Sindh Governor Muhammad Kamran Khan Tessori and provincial Minister for Auqaf and Religious Affairs Syed Riaz Hussain Shah Sherazi. The dignitaries laid a flower wreath at the shrine of the Sufi saint, marking the beginning of the three-day festivities.

The Auqaf Department has organized a range of events as part of the Urs celebrations, including Mehfil-e-Sama, Mehfil Na’at, and a special Milad Mehfil for women.

Secretary Religious Affairs and Chief Administrator Auqaf Sindh Syed Attaullah Shah were also present during the inauguration ceremony, which set the tone for the three-day celebrations.

The Urs of Abdullah Shah Ghazi is a significant event in the cultural and religious calendar of Karachi, attracting thousands of devotees and pilgrims from across the country. The shrine of the Sufi saint, located in Clifton, Karachi, is a revered site of spiritual significance, and the Urs celebrations are a testament to the enduring legacy of Abdullah Shah Ghazi.
