Shaheen likely to lose Pakistan T20I captaincy

12 March, 2024 10:33

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi is likely to lose the Pakistan T20I captaincy after series of defeats during the New Zealand tour and HBL Pakistan Super League season nine.

Pakistan suffered a crushing 4-1 defeat against New Zealand, while in the HBL PSL defending champions Lahore Qalandars led by Shaheen were the first team to get eliminated from the tournament after six straight defeats.

Qalandars only managed to win two games during their 2024 campaign, their worst in HBL PSL history.

According to Express News, new Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi has received suggestion for a change in T20I captaincy.

They believe Shaheen, 23, is too young and inexperienced to lead the Pakistan team, and some suggested that that change would impact Pakistan team’s performance in the World Cup.

The final decision will be made by Mohsin Naqvi in this regard.

In case Shaheen was removed, Mohammad Rizwan is favourite to succeed the pacer. However, return of Babar Azam at the post is on cards as well.

Naqvi has not yet met Shaheen or any other cricketer individually; he had invited several players to Islamabad together. After the PSL, discussions on various matters will be conducted in separate meetings.
