Shan Masood likely to lose Pakistan Test captaincy

After back-to-back series sweep, Shan Masood’s Test captaincy stint is likely to come to an end as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is considering other options.

Shan was appointed as Babar Azam’s successor last year after he was removed from all three formats.

Under his captaincy, Pakistan suffered a 3-0 series loss against Australia and most recently 2-0 defeat against Bangladesh.

His individual performance was also underwhelming. During these five games as captain, he managed to score just 286 runs at an average of 28.

Though, newly appointed red-ball head coach Jason Gillespie has expressed confidence in Masood’s abilities and could advocate for him to remain in the role.

Masood has denied any intention to resign voluntarily and has expressed a desire to continue leading the team.

The PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been in constant communication with officials in this regard and the recent series defeat have deeply disappointed him.

Due to the reason, a review of the team and captain’s performance is expected in the coming days.

If a change in captaincy is decided, Mohammad Rizwan appears to be the leading candidate.

His recent performances have been strong, and he could become Pakistan’s captain across all formats in the future.
