Newly-elected Sindh Assembly members take oath amid protest

The maiden session of Sindh Assembly is underway in which newly-elected members are taking oath.

The session of the Sindh Assembly is being chaired by former speaker Agha Siraj Durrani, which officially started with the recitation of the Holy Quran.

Out of 168 members of Sindh Assembly, 114 members belong to People’s Party while 36 members belong to MQM-Pakistan.

Nine members contesting the elections as independents have applied to the Election Commission to join the Sunni Ittehad Council, while the members of GDA and Jamaat-e-Islami will not participate in today’s function.

On the other hand, the opposition alliance consisting of GDA, Jamaat-e-Islami and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has announced a protest outside the Sindh Assembly, while the Sindh Home Department has imposed Section 144 in Karachi for a month in the wake of security concerns.

Sindh Assembly session adjourned

The Sindh Assembly session today has been adjourned till 11am on Sunday after Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani announced the schedule for the elections of the speaker and deputy speaker.

According to a statement issued by the Sindh Assembly, the timing for submitting the nomination papers for the roles is from 2pm to 3pm today (Saturday).

Their delivery is allowed till 5pm.

The scrutiny of the papers will be conducted at 6pm today, said in the order. The list of valid nominations will be affixed on the board at 7pm.
