In a controversial move, Tajikistan’s parliament has passed a bill banning the hijab, a traditional headscarf worn by Muslim women.

The new law imposes severe penalties for those who violate the ban.

As per the law, individuals caught wearing the hijab or other prohibited religious clothing will face fines of up to 7,920 somoni ($700). The law also stipulates harsher fines for government officials and religious leaders, who could be penalized between 54,000 to 57,600 somoni ($4,800). Companies that allow employees to wear such clothing will incur fines of 39,500 somoni ($3,500).

While an unofficial ban on the hijab has existed for several years, this new legislation solidifies the prohibition, affecting the predominantly Muslim population of Tajikistan.

With 98 percent of the country’s population identifying as Muslim, the law has sparked significant concern and opposition.

The new law extends beyond the hijab ban, also prohibiting children from participating in the festive activities and gift-giving traditions associated with the Eidul Fitr and Eidul Azha.

Meanwhile, Government officials have justified these measures by citing the need to ensure the proper education and safety of children during these periods.
