This cricket club bans players from hitting sixes

In a move that has sparked debate among cricket enthusiasts, Southwick and Shoreham Cricket Club, one of Britain’s oldest cricket clubs, has introduced a novel rule banning batters from hitting sixes during matches on Green ground in Brighton.

The decision comes after repeated complaints from neighboring residents about balls hitting properties, cars, and individuals.

Founded in 1790, the club has altered the ancient sport’s laws to ensure safety, a decision that resonates with South Asians familiar with street cricket, where similar rules often apply.

As per the new rule, no runs will be counted for the first six hit, and the batter will be deemed out for hitting a second six in the same innings.

While some batters have expressed disappointment, citing the thrill of hitting sixes as an integral part of the game, others acknowledge the need for safety measures.

One of the club batters heavily criticised the newly introduced rule and termed it “ridiculous”.

“Hitting the bowler for a six out is part of the glory of the sport. How can you ban it? It’s ridiculous.

“To take that away removes the joy of it. I don’t agree that the rules should be tinkered with in this fashion.”

Another batter said: “Everything is about health and safety these days and insurance companies are charging a fortune to indemnify sports clubs against accidental damage or injury to bystanders.

“It’s a very small ground and can’t accommodate the testosterone-fuelled young men who come along and just want to hit the ball as far as they can.

“My parents and grandparents lived in this house before me and cricket balls were always sailing over and causing damage. Over the years we’ve had tiles smashed off the roof, windows broken and all sorts.”

It is pertinent to mention that the Green ground, surrounded by residential homes with short boundaries, has nets to prevent balls from escaping, but their height is restricted due to nearby trees.
