Torkham border reopened after Afhanistan accepted valid travel documents for drivers from April 1

23 January, 2024 17:42

The Pak-Afghan border at Torkham reopens today (Tuesday) after a row over passports and visa issues halted the trade since January 12.

Pakistan initiated to set rules of valid passport and visa requirment for drivers and assistants, which Afghanistan disapproved and resulting in complete closure of trade b/w the two neighbouring countries.

The Afghan government officials along with Afghan transporters and Chamber of Commerce representatives met with Pakistani trade officials at the embassy in Kabul and requested the reopening of the Torkham border for the second time in as many days.

Pakistan has now accepted the request from Afghanistan and granted a relaxation until March 31, 2024 for drivers. However, starting on 1 April, both a visa and passport will be mandatory.

The Torkham border crossing has been closed a number of times in recent months, including in September when it was shut for nine days due to clashes between border forces.

Pakistan deported half a million Afghans living in Pakistan without valid papers in recent months.

Pakistan alleges Tehrik Taliban Pakistan leaders and fighters have found sanctuary in Afghanistan and lauch attacks in Pakistan. The Afghan Taliban government insists it does not allow the Pakistani Taliban to use its soil to launch attacks in Pakistan.
