KARACHI: A district and session court has acquitted Lyari gang leader Uzair Baloch and Ghaffar alias Mama in the Rehman Dacoit police encounter case due to lack of evidence.

Notorious Karachi criminal Rehman Dakait was killed late on Aug. 9, 2009 by Karachi Police, along with his three accomplices.

Rehman was reportedly involved in over 80 criminal cases and was a central figure in the gang wars of Lyari – one of the most populous and oldest localities of Karachi.

Rehman and his three accomplices were killed in an exchange of fire with the police.During the court proceedings of the Rehman Dacoit police encounter case, the judge ruled that Uzair Baloch and Ghaffar Mama were to be acquitted due to insufficient evidence.

Uzair Baloch’s lawyer stated that there was no evidence against Uzair Baloch from the police, and there were contradictions in the prosecution’s witnesses’ statements.

In January 2021, the prime suspect was arrested in this case. However, due to a lack of evidence and contradictions in the statements of the prosecution’s witnesses, the court has now acquitted him.

Baloch had already been acquitted in 39 cases.

On March 1, an ATC acquitted Uzair Baloch and other suspects in a case pertaining to an attack on policemen  during the Lyari operation.

The ATC pronounced the verdict to acquit Uzair after the prosecution failed to establish the charges against him and three others.

The other acquitted suspects included Muhammad Salam alias Mullah Nisar, Zakir alias Dada and Ghulam Muhammad
