Muslims in India are also expected to observe the Ashura on July 17 this year.

The Ashura

Ashura is a day of commemoration in Islam. It occurs annually on the tenth of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar.

Moreover, it is also the day of mourning as they annually commemorate the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

During Muharram, and especially at Ashura, people mark processions by flagging themselves with chains or knives in a formal display of mourning.

The atmosphere is mournful, and many people wear black as a sign of mourning.

In congregations, scholars and remembrancers remember the incident of Karbala and the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA). These gatherings aim to inspire reflection, piety, and a sense of community among participants. The Islamic month is also a time for acts of charity and compassion, as the faithful show support and kindness to those in need.
