KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast thunderstorms to lash Karachi on Thursday and Friday, bringing much-needed relief to the city that has been reeling under intense heat.

According to the Met Office, storms are expected to occur before the thundershowers, with rainfall predicted to lash the suburbs of the metropolis during the afternoon or evening.

Earlier, the Met Office had predicted isolated heavy rainfall to hit various parts of Sindh, including Karachi, on Wednesday. In a statement on Tuesday, the PMD forecast a dust-thunderstorm or rain with isolated heavy rainfall from June 26 to July 1 in various parts of the Sindh province.

In its forecast, the Met office said, monsoon winds will enter Karachi from the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea starting June 26.

“A low-pressure system currently present in Gujarat, India, is set to move towards Pakistan, bringing with it the much-needed rain,” it said.

“Citizens can expect light to moderate rain on June 29,” said a spokesperson said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Karachi has been experiencing hazardous weather conditions, particularly during summers, in the form of heat waves and a lack of cool breeze in the atmosphere.

Environmentalists and climate experts have blamed the increasing urbanization and lack of green cover in the city for its deteriorating climate sphere, dubbing it a “concrete jungle”.
