Trinidad Police Find 56 Bodies, Including 50 Infants, in Abandoned Cemetery

19 April, 2026 15:59

Law enforcement agencies in the Caribbean country of Trinidad and Tobago have recovered 56 bodies, most of them children, from a cemetery that had been abandoned there.

The bodies were reported in a statement by local police that 50 of the bodies were children, while 4 were adult men and 2 were women.

The police have started an investigation into the matter.

The bodies of a woman and a man also had postmortem signs, while all the adults had identification tags used for bodies in mortuaries.

Police said that initial investigations indicated that this was likely a case of illegal disposal of bodies.

The statement further stated that a more in-depth analysis is being conducted in this regard to determine the origin of the remains and any violation of law or regulations.

The bodies were recovered from a cemetery in the town of Cumuto, 40 kilometers from Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago.

After the discovery of the bodies, local police closed the cemetery and began an investigation into the incident.

Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro acknowledged that the incident was very heartbreaking.

“We are aware of the emotional impact this incident will have on the affected families and the public at the national level,” he said.

He said that the police are taking steps to bring the facts to light, keeping in mind the sensitivity of the incident, and that everybody will be treated with respect, and if any individual or institution is found to be involved, action will be taken against them according to the law.

This country has faced problems due to crime in recent years.

A state of emergency was imposed there in December 2024 to prevent gang violence and remains in effect.
