Fresh Wave of Violence Hits Manipur, Modi Govt Fails to Control Situation

06 July, 2026 11:24

Fresh violence has broken out in the Indian state of Manipur, with critics saying the Modi government has failed to restore peace in the conflict-hit region.

According to The Times of India, new ethnic clashes have taken place in Kamjong district, where unknown attackers set fire to about 20 houses at three different locations.

The report said the attackers burned down the border village of Phaimol, which is mainly home to the Kuki community. In response, villages belonging to the Naga community were also targeted.

The Times of India reported that 15 houses in Phaimol village were completely destroyed, while seven Naga homes were partially damaged in the violence.

In another incident, attackers also set fire to seven houses in a Tangkhul Naga settlement in Kamjong district, according to the report.

Amnesty International has described the violence, human rights violations, and displacement in Manipur as a major failure of the Modi government.

Professor Ajailiu Niumai said the government’s handling of the crisis has allowed the conflict to grow worse, adding that the situation is now more destructive than the civil unrest seen in the 1990s.

The latest incidents have once again raised concerns over the government’s ability to maintain law and order in Manipur.
