Massive Iraq Funeral for Martyred Leader Ayatollah Khamenei Highlighted Iran-Iraq Unity, Analyst Says

The large-scale funeral ceremonies held in Iraq for martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei demonstrated the deep religious and political ties between Iran and Iraq while sending a strong message to the United States and its allies, according to an Iraqi political analyst.

Speaking to Press TV, Jumaa al-Atwani, a senior political analyst and head of Iraq’s Horizon Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said the historic funeral processions in Iraq reflected the strength of relations between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples.

Al-Atwani described the ceremonies in Iraq as a significant event, saying the participation of large crowds in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala represented a display of solidarity and unity.

“The magnificent funeral of Imam Khamenei in Iraq and the participation of millions of Iraqi citizens showed the depth of unity and solidarity between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples,” he said, adding that the gathering also carried a political message against what he described as foreign attempts to weaken regional alliances.

Reports from Iraqi media estimated that millions of people participated in the funeral processions across Najaf and Karbala, with the large turnout contributing to changes in the schedule of the final funeral arrangements in Iran.

Funeral Seen as Symbol of Religious and Political Bonds

Al-Atwani said the funeral would remain a historic moment, describing it as an exceptional farewell rarely witnessed for political or religious figures.

He said many followers of Shia Islam in Iraq viewed Ayatollah Khamenei as an influential religious authority and a figure representing resistance, independence and support for oppressed communities.

According to the analyst, the ceremonies held during the month of Muharram carried additional religious significance for many participants, who connected the event with broader themes of sacrifice, faith and devotion.

He described Ayatollah Khamenei as a figure remembered by supporters for his role in promoting Islamic values, independence and resistance against oppression.

Message of Unity Against External Pressure

Al-Atwani said the massive participation in Iraq delivered two key messages: that efforts to weaken Iran-Iraq relations had failed and that regional resistance movements remained connected.

He highlighted the presence of large numbers of young Iraqis during the processions in Najaf and Karbala, saying their participation reflected strong religious and political awareness.

The analyst added that Ayatollah Khamenei’s focus on youth and their role in shaping the future contributed to his popularity among younger generations.

Legacy of Ayatollah Khamenei

Reflecting on Ayatollah Khamenei’s political and religious legacy, Al-Atwani said he dedicated his life to Islamic principles, perseverance and leadership.

He said Ayatollah Khamenei played a central role in guiding Iran after the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Revolution, and remained a key figure in Iran’s political system for decades.

According to the analyst, Ayatollah Khamenei’s statements and positions influenced supporters across different countries, including Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Bahrain and Yemen.

Al-Atwani said the large number of Iraqis who travelled from different provinces to attend the funeral reflected the respect and emotional connection many people felt toward the martyred leader.

“The funeral of Imam Khamenei in Iraq was a popular and ideological victory,” he said, describing the turnout as a significant moment that attracted global attention.

The analyst further claimed that public gatherings in Iraq following the funeral demonstrated continued support for Iran and regional resistance movements, while opposing foreign military pressure.

He added that supporters in Iran, Iraq and other countries would continue following what he described as Ayatollah Khamenei’s path and legacy.
