Iran Women Make History with Fourth-Place Finish at Asian Volleyball Championship

Iran’s women’s volleyball team secured a historic fourth-place finish at the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Asian Championship after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Japan in the bronze-medal match in Tianjin, China. Japan, ranked sixth in the world, won 25-21, 25-16 and 26-24 on Sunday to claim bronze, but Iran’s campaign marked the most successful performance in the history of its women’s national team at the Asian Championship.

Iran had never previously reached the tournament semifinals before defeating Indonesia 3-1 in the quarterfinals on Friday to break into the continental top four for the first time. The team then lost 3-0 to hosts China in the semifinals, before falling to Japan in the bronze-medal match. Despite the defeats, Iran achieved its 2026 target of reaching the final four, while Japan’s bronze medal secured its qualification for the 2027 FIVB Volleyball World Cup.

The fourth-place finish represents the culmination of a development program launched by Iran’s volleyball federation in 2024 with the objective of breaking into Asia’s top four by 2026. The program included targeted investment, changes to the national-team setup and the appointment of South Korean coach Lee Do-hee. Iran had also risen from 80th to around 40th in the world rankings following improved results, and its historic victory over Indonesia in Tianjin finally delivered the breakthrough the women’s program had been pursuing.
