Naqvi Says Detailed Debate Underway on Provinces, Calls for Stronger Local Leadership

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has said a detailed debate is currently underway over the structure of provinces and the country’s administrative system. Speaking about the need for effective governance, Naqvi noted that similar systems of empowered local administration and leadership exist across Europe and the United Kingdom.
Naqvi said he wanted to see the emergence of strong local leaders who could effectively represent and serve their communities. “We want many Sadiq Khans, many Mamdanis and many Erdogans,” he said, referring to prominent political figures who rose through local or city-level politics and went on to play major roles in public life.
The interior minister stressed that Pakistan needed greater space for leadership to emerge at the grassroots level. He said the objective should be to bring capable leadership closer to the people and strengthen governance at the local level, as discussions over administrative reforms and the possible restructuring of provinces continue.
