Pezeshkian Calls for Reform of Global Governance, Equal Treatment Under International Law

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for genuine reform of global governance mechanisms, saying meaningful multilateralism is impossible unless all countries are treated equally under international law. Addressing a closed-door session of BRICS leaders in New Delhi on Saturday, he said stronger multilateralism and effective global governance were increasingly necessary to confront growing global challenges.

Pezeshkian pointed to a contradiction in the international system, where greater interdependence among nations is accompanied by a resurgence of unilateral policies, coercive measures and the use of financial and technological tools for political influence. He warned that such practices undermine the foundations of global governance and said the credibility of the international order depends on its ability to protect the rights of all countries regardless of their size or power.

The Iranian president said multilateralism loses its meaning when the UN Charter fails to protect countries from unlawful military action or when international rules are applied differently to different states. He said Iran had directly experienced the consequences of such double standards, citing US and Israeli military aggression against Iran and the resulting damage to civilian infrastructure and vital facilities.
