Fuel Price Hike Sparks Protests Across Syria Under HTS Rule

Protests have erupted across Syria after the ruling Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) authorities announced a sharp increase in fuel prices. The HTS oil ministry raised fuel prices by 25 to 40 percent from midnight Sunday, attributing the decision to rising global energy costs and disruptions in international oil and gas markets amid the ongoing US-Israeli war against Iran. The increase immediately triggered public anger, with demonstrators taking to the streets in several Syrian cities and towns.

Protesters blocked major roads, including the M5 highway linking northern and southern Syria, with demonstrations reported near Maarret al-Nuuman south of Idlib. Protests were also reported in Mari and Al-Bab in northern Aleppo province, as well as in Raqqa, Deir ez-Zor and Hasakeh. Demonstrators burned tires, established roadblocks and disrupted traffic to express opposition to the higher fuel prices. Videos reportedly showed protesters blocking the M4 highway in the 47 area, including in front of oil tanker trucks.

Security forces moved to disperse demonstrations in several areas. In Raqqa, authorities reportedly cleared roads and removed burning tires, while similar confrontations were reported in Hasakeh and Deir ez-Zor. Local reports alleged that regime forces used live ammunition while attempting to break up protests in the three areas. The demonstrations highlight growing public frustration over worsening economic conditions and the rising cost of essential commodities, with the fuel price increase adding further pressure on Syrian households and businesses.
