US Moves B-1 Bombers From UK Over Possible Iranian Drone Threat
The United States moved around a dozen B-1 bomber aircraft from a US airbase in Britain due to concerns over a possible Iranian drone attack, according to The Washington Post.
The report, based on intelligence assessments, said US officials had received several warnings in recent days about possible attacks. Following the warnings, the B-1 bombers were moved from Royal Air Force Fairford.
US officials were particularly concerned about the possibility of Iran using large numbers of low-cost, small drones in an attack similar to Ukraine’s June 2025 Operation Spider Web against Russia.
During that operation, more than 100 small armed drones were reportedly transported in cargo trucks and deployed near Russian military airfields, causing significant damage to Russia’s long-range bomber fleet.
Concerns about the security of US bombers increased further in late September after British police arrested five people in a white van outside RAF Fairford. No drones or explosives were found, although police reportedly found petrol in the vehicle.
Sources familiar with the aircraft’s relocation said the B-1 bombers could still operate from US bases if needed for any potential action against Iran. Their removal from Britain does not mean they have been completely taken out of possible military operations.
The report said the growing use of small drones and modern warfare technology has created new security challenges for large and expensive military assets, particularly at airbases located near populated areas.
It also noted that similar drone operations have been used in conflicts involving Russia, Iran and Israel, highlighting the growing threat posed by low-cost drones to high-value military targets.
