Alberta Voters Reject Independence, Choose to Remain Part of Canada

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that Albertans have made a “clear choice” to remain part of Canada, as early figures indicate that around three-quarters of voters opposed moving towards an independence referendum. The vote focused on whether Alberta should remain within Canada or pursue a process towards independence.
Carney welcomed the outcome, declaring that “Alberta chose Canada.” The province’s premier also said voters had supported a “stronger Alberta,” highlighting calls for greater provincial influence and autonomy within the Canadian federation.
Despite the apparent victory for the pro-Canada camp, separatist leader Jeffrey Rath said the independence movement would continue. The result has not ended the debate over Alberta’s sovereignty, with questions surrounding provincial autonomy, immigration and voter identification also featuring in the wider political discussion.
