JUIF challenges Presidential Ordinance for Senate election thru open ballot.

JUIF challenges Presidential Ordinance

A five-member bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed hearing the plea today (Monday).

The Presidential reference seeking the court’s opinion on ‘open ballot’ for Senate elections.

The other members include Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Yahya Afridi.

In its plea, the JUIF termed the presidential ordinance as irrational and unconstitutional.

It further said that the ordinance was borne out of malicious intent.

Moreover, the JUIF requested the apex court to declare the ordinance null and void.

Besides, it argued that the step of government sabotages autonomy of Supreme Court of Pakistan and Parliament.

Earlier, President Dr. Arif Alvi signed the Election Amendment Ordinance 2021 to hold Senate elections through open ballot.
