PPP files review plea on SC’s reserved seats verdict

23 July, 2024 13:05

The Pakistan People Party on Tuesday filed a review petition against the Supreme Court verdict granting reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The PPP followed the footsteps of its government allay The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz against the top court’s ruling.

Farooq H Naek filed the plea on behalf of the PPP, seeking to overturn the apex court verdict of July 12 pertaining to reserved seats of women and non-Muslims.

In its appeal, the party objected to granting the reserved seats to the PTI, arguing that the former ruling party had not claimed any entitlement to them.

The PML-N had filed a review petition on July 15 in the apex court against the same verdict. The review petition had asked a number of questions including whether the SIC should be granted the reserved seats.

Earlier in July, a 13-member bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, ruled that the PTI is eligible for the allocation of reserved seats, dealing a major setback to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition.

Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the 8-5 majority verdict, setting aside the Peshawar High Court’s (PHC) order wherein it had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) decision denying the reserved seats to the SIC.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Naeem Afghan, Justice Yahya Afridi, and Justice Ameenuddin Khan opposed the majority decision.
