“Brain Rot” chosen as Oxford 2024 Word of the Year
The Oxford University Press (OUP) every year chooses a word that reflects the past 12 months or is of long-term cultural significance.
The word chosen for the year 2024 is very interesting. This word is “brain rot”.
According to the Oxford University Press statement, “Brain rot” was chosen by taking into account the votes of more than 37, 000 people.
OUP had shortlisted 6 words from which “Brain Root” was chosen.
The word is primarily used to describe a decline in a person’s mental or intellectual state, especially for people who view a lot of content (such as online content).
The press reported that the term gained popularity in 2024 as concerns emerged that viewing too much substandard content online was having negative effects on mental health.
Interestingly, Brain Rot is not a new word but even before the advent of computers.
The word was first used in the 1854 book Walden.
“Brain rot is a term used to describe the dangers of virtual life and how we spend our free time,” said Casper Garthhole, president of Oxford Languages.
The Oxford Press previously selected Riz in 2023, Goblin Mode in 2022 and Wax in 2021.
